Well here is some
info for any Cingular users. (Not tested yet) but hey, I got them to admit
something... only took 3 or 4 months...
I sent them
this:
Comments : It is my
understanding that somewhere in the Cingular system there is a TAP modem(s)
that will allow you to send SMS messages to your phone from a computer. I
have found the numbers below which do answer but I need to know the format to
send. Cingular Wireless 800-469-5351 TAP Cingular
Wireless 800-477-4550 TAP Cingular Wireless
800-909-4602 TAP Thanks Tony

The TAP service as provided by Cingular Wireless is an input
process/connection used to enter text messages into the Cingular
Wireless Short Message Service Center (SMSC) for delivery to a digital
mobile phone.
Do to the wide variety of software and hardware available, Cingular can
not guaranty that any software or hardware available will work with its
service.
We do not provide the software or computer hardware to any customer for
this service.
It is up to the customer to acquire the necessary software/hardware and
configure it for use with service.
The following is provided as a means to assist in the customer in
setting up his computer and software.
Verify the following with the customer:
Modem BAUD rate is set to 1200, 2400 or 9600 baud. No other will work.
Data bits set to 7.
Stop bits set to 1.
Parity set to Even (E).
Set Max characters per message to: 140
Data compression, if available, is set to OFF.
If available, set Service type to: Alphnumeric.
If on PBX system, add the outside access number, usually 9, at the
beginning of the number dialed. (Example: 9,817-355-3052).
When dialing Long Distance, be sure to add a "1" to the beginning of the
number dialed. Entered after outside access number and before number
dialed. (Example: 9,1-800-496-5351)
Have the customer send a TAP test message to himself, note number.
Check SMSC - TPSMT, Message View to see if message was received by
SMSC. Thanks, Tv

Would you be willing to share the configs you used with either
Verizon or T-mobile. I'm trying to get TAP info sent to a
Pagewriter
2000x. Maybe a endless battle....
Thanks for any info!
Lance
I
had simliar issues setting this up with verizon , sprint and T-mobile, It
took several calls to each to find an operator who understood what I was
talking about, thier websites were of no help. and I had to experiment
with the paging config to find a combination that worked. None of the
800 numbers they gave me worked or any of the numbers I located on the
internet. Verizon and Sprint are working fine for me now, both with
local numbers I'm still working on T-mobile
I
realize this isn't much help, but I feel your pain.

No, I am still
working on this issue; I have been told that I need to get the terminal
number from Nextel to transfer the analog data, but Nextel does not seem
to have a clue of what I am referring to. If you get your issue solved
before I do, please let me know.
Thanks
Kevin

I am
having this same problem with the pager. I am using Nextel.
Is there a terminal number that I need to get from Nextel that is not
the same as the paging number from a landline. If anyone is using
a Nextel phone for the paging service ( not the email text) the please
reply and let me know how you have this setup.

You'd
actually want to edit a pager notification device, not a
beeper. For the number you need to put in a phone number that
corresponds to your service; it is generally NOT the pager number.
You can call your provider if you don't have this (I called arch to get
mine). The pager id is then just the pager phone
number. I used the default dial
string.
BTW, this
provided a use for one of about thirty old decommissioned 14.4
modems...I knew there was a reason for saving them!

[WhatsUp Forum] Help with using modem.
Hello.
I need some
help with making use of a modem in WUG.
I am running
WUG 7.04 on a dedicated Dell 1650 server. I have installed a PCI
modem into this server.
I have a pager
that accepts text emails. I'd like to configure WUG to send a
message to this pager via the modem.
1.Can WUG
with an internal pci modem or does it need to be an external modem
connected to my com port?
2.When
editing the beeper notification, what do I put for a beeper
number?
3.What
should the dial string look like?
4.What do
I put for a com port if I'm using an internal pci modem?
Thanks for all
your assistance.
