Connect DSL Modem & Telephone to Same Wall Outlet?
Is it possible to connect both a DSL modem and a telephone to the same telephone
wall outlet? If so, then will an inexpensive duplex-splitter work or should I
look
for a separate box (from Radio Shack) to wire into the present box to create two
side-by-side boxes with one for the DSL modem and one for the telephone?
Most people use the little micro filters at the point the "voice phones" are
located.
This means the DSL is available in the entire house, if needed. It also means
a small filter is needed at EACH voice phone.
So a simple answer is yes, you can use a cheap phone splitter and connect the
DSL
modem to one side, -- and the filter, then the voice phone to the other side...
That is not how I do it however. I have a "whole house DSL filter" and ALL voice
lines are filtered at one time in the basement.
The single line to the DSL modem is NOT filtered (as such) and is run as a
"home run" line to the modem location... If this last paragraph does not make
sense, it is likely safe to ignore it. This is more or a "professional" or
custom
type of installation and more expensive for most people.
