Make sure everyone has changed the file format within Excel to the latest or
the top one on the list... should be something like Microsoft Excel Workbook
and not any of the combination 95, 97, 2000, RTF types. When files are
shared and you have someone using something less than the latest- my home
Excel 2000 lists it as Microsoft Excel Workbook and it is at the top to the
drop down list within Tools, Options, Transition.

You are begging for trouble with any other combination in a network
environment... including what you describe.

Diane,

I'll don't (and can't) dispute anything you have reported.

My system does seem to 'take a copy' of the attachment when it puts the
entry into the outbox/starts transmission
That's with the comms cable connected -
I moved the attached files soon after the transmission started -
      and it just continued.
Then pulled the cable halfway through a 30Mb transmission -
     got connection terminated
Reconnected cable and transmission restarted -
even without resurrecting the attached files.
---------------------------

But I have in the past I have received workbooks from clients, where Excel
will not open the attachment.

I know that those clients keep the large workbooks open on their desktop
continually throughout the day, and
when they alter something they didn't mean to, or shouldn't -
and the stuff in them is no longer presented as they want, or doesn't
balance:
Then they ship the thing to me to have it 'put right' and returned.

Unfortunately, I cannot pass on those 'unopeneable' copies as the content is
company confidential, and financially sensitive

I will be trying to find out the circumstances that generate the files that
Excel won't open.

I know that all that client group are now on WinXP - it's only me that is on
2K, but some of them were on 98, ME - and even one, back in 2003 was still
on 95.

Having tried the removed file and pulled cable - then the only other things
are:

A large complex file - kept open and being changed (saved) during the
attach,
and on through the transmit -
and that will be fun to get timed right on a fast comms connection.

And the effect of AV processing on outward bound mail
- especially if it's set to remove the virus, and allow processing to
continue with the 'cleaned file'

Also - I suppose we shouldn't discount basic transmission errors -

Annoying when you don't know WHY?

I created an excel file and attached it to a message.
I disabled send immediately.
I pressed Send to send the message to the Outbox.
I edited the excel file and saved the changes.
I pressed send and receive.
The old version of the excel file was sent - the one I attached to the OE
message.
