Task manager shows only 27 processes running, none of which seem to
account for the unusual CPU usage.

Start, Run, "Taskmgr.exe" and OK.
Processes tab will tell you what is using CPU time.

More than likely there's other infectious things still active.  Getting
rid
of all the stuff that "comes along for the ride" with any virus
infection is
extremely difficult. You need more than Ad-Aware, and more than just an
anti-virus program.   Among other essential tools which are free:

Spybot Search & Destroy
Microsoft Antispyware
Sysinternals' Autoruns (use instead of MSCONFIG)
Emisoft.com A-squared Free

And most importantly - after loading these programs and updating online,
boot into safe mode before scanning.
