With relatively inexpensive equipment, it's not necessary to be in front of
your house to eavesdrop on your wireless traffic.  With better equipment,
someone can do that from a much longer distance.

I'm aware that tests have been conducted where 802.11 signals
could be picked up from miles away. If you look at the details of
those tests you'll find that they were using high-gain (bulky) antennas,
and there was a clear line of sight. More common is the so-called War Driver who is looking for signals
of opportunity to exploit. He'll choose a busy parking lot next to
a business establishment rather than a quiet residential street.
