Excellent point for thought. I run Counterspy, the "commercial" version, as it were, of the MS "beta". I have found it to be more thorough and feel more secure than with the MS product itself, for which there does indeed seem to be some evidence that it has been watered down a bit in response to arguments from spyware/adware vendors. Certainly the MS product at one point (and maybe still) ceased to detect Claria, formerly known as "Gator". Having been Gatored in the past, and having wasted much of a day unGatoring the machine, an antispyware application that doesn't detect it would be useless for me.

Doesn't M$ own Gator? If it does, then it's not going to delete it now is it?

I personally wouldn't trust M$ to keep my system clean, I'd actually not ever trust just one piece of anti-spyware to keep it clean. I use Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster and SpyBot S&D, so far they seem to be doing their job. Not noticed any evidence of anything getting past them.

Just my tuppence worth
