My opinion of 1and1 went down a lot the past few days. A friend has a domain
there under the 3 yr free plan, along with a domain name for $6/yr. Her
domain stopped working some time ago, but being ill, she didn't discover it
until recently. She figured they closed the hosting account for non-use, as
she got sick before she had time to put anything up. The domain name is
registered to her until Dec 1 2005 so she decided to transfer it to my
account at godaddy (then use domain forwarding) before it expires, so she
doesn't have to renew it with 1and1. Well, the transfer won;t go through
because she set up the registrants address using sales@ the domain - and has
no access to those mailboxes anymore. So she contacted 1and1 support. It
took two emails to find out the domain is locked and to unlock it she needs
to call a UK number - which google shows is a collection agency 1and1 uses.
Yeah, right, she's going to make an international call to a collection
agency - they have her number in the whois records - they can call her if
they want to collect. (Why they couldn't tell her it was locked in the first
email is beyond me.)
Now.. remember, she signed up for the free 3 yr plan... so there is no
hosting fee. There is a domain name fee, but if they couldn't bill the card
(that's what i figure happened, especially after reading posts about 1and1
at a UK complaint site) why did they renew the domain name or not delete it
after 30 days or so of non-payment? She never received a notice that there
was a problem either.(She's pretty sure she was charged for the domain name
last december but forgets which card she used and needs to find all the
bills.) They coulda deleted the registration months ago... instead of
apparently turning it over to collection agency (for $6!!!!). Oh, and since
we made an attempt to transfer the domain, they changed the status to
CLIENT-TRANSFER-PROHIBITED. (It's not registrar locked - so if someone knows
how to swipe it... <g> )
Needless to say, we're waiting for the name to expire and i'll try to buy
it back for her.
