I removed the drive and have installed it in a USB adapter. My desktop is
currently running Chkdsk on it. 

Stsage one, file verification, was good.

Stage two, verifying indexes has been stuck at 4% for over 15 minutes. This
may be the problem.

I did not use the /F switch, so no repairs are being performed

Memory is ok and heat does not appear to play a role, since the 
machine did not reboot while the test was being run. Running a 
mem test may not stress the processor enough though.

If you have recovered, or given up on recovering, any data from 
the disk, then you might try zeroing out the drive using the 
the hard drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic software. Then 
try to install XP from scratch on the drive.
