I removed the drive and have installed it in a USB adapter. My desktop is currently running Chkdsk on it.
Stsage one, file verification, was good. Stage two, verifying indexes has been stuck at 4% for over 15 minutes. This may be the problem. If you have recovered, or given up on recovering, any data from the disk, then you might try zeroing out the drive using the the hard drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic software.
