Force a signature update. I received a .zip file in E-mail that wasn't
detected on Wednesday, and it's being detected now.

Every AV program has some "detection latency" from the time bad things start
circulating until a signature update detects them. I've never noticed AVG
take more than 24 hours from the time I receive something until an updated
signature detects it. I've heard of some others taking more than a day.

Then you also have a "automatic update" latency. AVG Free updates
signatures once a day. If your update window occurs just before a signature
update is made available, you could be almost 24 *more* hours further behind
due to that.

Yes, you can pay for something that checks for updated signatures every 4
hours or whatever. Even then, there's a chance things will get past. No
AV program is a guarantee against picking up undetected malware.

Finally, when you get something that's not detected, submit it to
virustotal.com and see if your non-detection is typical or unusual. You may
find that your program is behind on the automatic update part but other
programs don't even have signature updates ready yet.

Changing the subject line.
I have AVG AV (free) installed and fully running. IT updates "almost" every
day.

I have been getting e-mails with Virus's in them, (zip files of known bad
stuff),
but the AVG AV is not complaining at all...
It even tacks on the report that the e-mail was Virus free...
Of course I do NOT open or unzip those attachments, so I'm not sure what
might happen "next". AVG AV seems to be running as a proxy.
E-mail scanning is on fully. It says that in the AVG control panel...

I am starting to think I got what I paid for...
At least Norton warned me about EVERY bad thing that entered this machine...
I used to be an "Evanglist" for Norton, but tired of fixing other peoples
machines.
I never had a problem of my own. I am getting "great experience" on all
sides of
this issue...

I just remembered something... This computer has never had ANYTHING
Norton. It is a perfect machine to try the Norton stuff I got last year,
free AMIR...
They are all "activate" versions and never used...
