 This is why I consider this the easiest test.

I've also seen where the guy down the street put the power lead on the wrong connector & it blew out a thumb drive but not where one could see any damage but the drive was no longer usable in any USB port on any machine. So if I were to plug in the blown thumb drive into a USB port I surely couldn't rely on that as being a valid test of the USB port now could I ?

If one is to use a thumb drive as a diagnostic tool make sure it's a small cheap one.
