I would take the drive out of the laptop and hook it to a
desktop and copy the data off before trying anything else.
Adaptors are available for about $10-$20. Once the data is
safely off, make sure the chipset drivers are properly loaded.
This is a classic symptom when the chipset drivers are not
correctly installed or loaded.
BTW while the drive is on the desktop (if you go this route)
run a drive diagnostic program on the drive to be sure it's not
going south.
