In prep for setting up printer sharing on an "Windows XP
Home" computer, I wanted to see what showed up in the
workgroup (MSHOME) under MS Windows Network.
I was surprised to get an error message "the list of servers
for this workgroup is not currently available"!!
Why were you surprised? EXACTLY how did you get to MSHOME
workgroup?
1. Via "My Computer\Properties\Name" tab? 2. Via "Networking
Neighborhood: ? 3. Browsing with Windows Exploder ?
3.
I checked that message on Google and all the responses I
looked at seemed to focus on not being able to see a remote
computer on the LAN in the same workgroup.
Any ideas what I can do?
Yes, but they don't apply to this situation.
Is the fact that the user account doesn't have a password
relevant? If so, why?
The computer is not on a DOMAIN now is it? Of course not
because I believe you have to setup a PWD.
No.
Again, this is a problem on a single computer -- I hadn't
gotten to sharing anything.
I have no idea what "I hadn't gotten to sharing anything"
means. Are we talking about sharing a printer? Are we talking
about setting up shares aka sharing folders &/or drives on
your machine or another machine on your LAN? Is this machine
even on a LAN ?
From the top of my message:
"In prep for setting up printer sharing"
Yes.
No.
Yes.
Incidentally, this computer's connection to the Internet
works flawlessly.
The last that I knew the Internet is a network sometimes
referred to as a WAN [wide are network]. Since it is working
"flawlessly" then you are sharing something.
Not in the Microsoft sense. To my way of thinking, Microsoft
sharing means that the files and/or printer on my PC are
accessible to others on the same LAN.
