Jim's right. I've used older 802.11 DS equipment to talk to 802.11b
equipment with no problems. It's somewhat hit-and-miss, though. For
example, I have an old SMC 802.11 AP which talks just fine to my Orinoco
Gold. However I have a couple of Intalk 802.11 cards that often do not
want to talk to 802.11b APs. This could just be WEP requirements on the
AP, etc.

Not quite.
802.11 FH (or FHSS) is 1 or '2' (1.6 really) Mbps Frequency Hopping
(spread spectrum)
802.11 DS (nee: DSSS) is 1 or 2 (really!) Mbps Direct Sequence (spread
spectrum)
802.11b is backwards compatible with 802.11DS, as long as you don't
tell the STA (or AP) to
only associate at 11 and/or 5.5Mbps
So, the answer to the original question is, 'maybe'. Depends on which
technology you're buying.
