Don't drink the Mikrotik kool-aid just yet. You should probably give some consideration to StarOS. StarOS has an excellent industry standard mesh routing protocol built in - OLSR - and the popular X4000 platform is very low cost (~$350 or so in a four radio configuration).
I tried Mikrotik and went back to StarOS because I saw much better performance and maintainability for the wireless networks that I design and operate. Actual StarOS documentation is kind of sparse, but it uses a lot of standard Linux packages (OSLR, OSPF, quagga, cbq, iptables) that are well documented. Unfortunately, StarOS has not done a very good job of getting people trained or setting up good relationships with vendors, so you don't hear about it as much any more. For what I do, it is better than Mikrotik and I'm very happy with it.
