Take a look at SkyPilot gear, it seems to have all the advantages of Wimax, plus some benefits.
28 W PTMP in the 5+ Ghz bands, TDD, low cost cpe's. Only thing it really lacks, and is also a downfall of Wimax is the radio as a Demarc (Routing/Nat/PPPoE).
