Here is what I have done when I need to be above the roof.

Everything is from a plumbing supply store. Galvanized pipe in whatever 
diameter works for the install (1 1/4 to 1/12 depending on load and height). 
hanger clamps with ready-rod cut to length and guys if the height warrants 
it.
