+1 Here in the Amazon I've had plastic cased radios and their associated router on the other end get taken out by nearby lightning strikes when the mast the radio was on was attached to a large non-grounded metal roof on top of a wooden frame. The fix was to mount the radios on grounded poles (the poles go right down to the ground.). Grounding the roof might have been an option but I doubt I could have grounded it good enough.
When in these houses when a nearby strike hits we often hear a big zap when these roofs get a big induced voltage and it jumps to something on it's way to ground. There's a flash and at the same time a zap, and that's our cue to put our fingers in our ears before the BOOM.
