We use ICE at work to communicate C++ apps and it's really good. Very  
fast and easier than CORBA (not "easy", because there are so many  
modules you need to read 1500 pages if you want to be fluent with it).  
In fact, ICE was authored by Michi Henning, one of the fathers of  
CORBA, after much frustration with CORBA.
