I should know, but as I never needed to do that myself I don't. But I guess it's possible, unless I am completely crazy. Perhaps Martin knows, as he coded some stuff for his automated Debian build packages. It's even in the repo itself, but I haven't looked. What happens if you stay at the 'master' branch and simply 'git pull'? You should see a "(forced update)" for 'next'. And then you can checkout.
