So you are saying that you can't update the current site to include
a link and a "We are alive and accepting patches" message because 
the PHP/MySQL setup is difficult to handle.

So why not write a simple .html like in the good old days just to _start_
spreading the message? 

Let's keep it simple -- the alternative has caused some years of unwanted 
delay already.
