Hm. I *like* the default colors. (Then again, I like the colors of Intuition
as well, for much the same reason: they don't jangle my nerves.) I rarely,
if ever, think about changing them.

I expect a default background image to be distribution-based, and not
window-manager specific.

Do you have any screenshots of what you consider to be a modest but
attractive configuration?

I try Gnome and KDE every couple of years, and after a week or so I
give it up and throw it away, and go back to Windowmaker, or bail on
Linux-as-a-desktop and log in everywhere from an OS X Mac.

My most recent unhappy experience was with the fancy new Ubuntu UI.

If the UI gets in the way of getting work done, it's broken.
