There is always wicd, which perfectly replaces nm-applet, and has the
added benefit of being fairly desktop environment agnostic:

Package: wicd-gtk
Source: wicd
Version: 1.7.1-1
Installed-Size: 555
[ snip ]
Depends: python (>= 2.6.6-7~), python-gtk2, python-glade2, wicd-daemon
(= 1.7.1-1)
Recommends: gksu, python-notify
Breaks: wicd (<= 1.6.2.2-4)
Description-en: wired and wireless network manager - GTK+ client
 Wicd is a general-purpose network configuration server which aims
 to provide a simple but flexible interface for connecting to networks.
 Its features include:
  * wide variety of settings;
  * ability to connect to (and maintain profiles for) both wired and
    wireless networks;
  * support for many encryption schemes, including WEP, WPA, WPA2 and
    custom schemes;
  * wireless-tools compatibility.
 .
 This package provides the GTK+ client, which has no GNOME dependencies,
 making it easy to use in Xfce, Fluxbox, Openbox, Enlightenment, ...
 It also supports a tray icon showing network activity and signal
 strength.

I am currently uploading the 801 MB ISO of the heavily reworked Window
Maker Live CD to sourceforge. I have switched from a Ubuntu base to pure
Debian/sid now, and the Window Maker desktop uses wmsystemtray, wicd,
wmudmount, and wmmixer as main dockapps, with wmmail as addition.

Updated screenhots, the Debian Live config folders needed to build the
ISO, and a torrent file are already up. This time and for the future, it
will be amd64 only. www.sourceforge.net/projects/wmlive is the place.

Once the upload has completed, a separate announcement with more details
will be made. Watch this space. ;)

Cheers
Paul
