Answering my own question - by reading the available command line
options of the namazu indexing routine - I note that included are
switches for updating existing indexes.  And, presumably, these options
are the defaults used by the wwwoffle-namazu program.

So the query that remains relates to the failure of the called scripts
to complete indexing the WWWOFFLE cache in 40 minutes. That still
seems a bit excessive, based on a subsequent experience of creating an
index of a 6MB motley collection of ".txt" and ".html" files (cooking
recipes) in less than 5 minutes - by running mknmz from the command
line.
