Hey Mike,
I too had problems with reliably getting a D710 in/out of KISS mode
until I found this code:

The use of STTY was the closest alternative I could find but it still
never was even 80% reliable. That .c program is 100%.
I use that in my extensive packet startup script:
http://www.trinityos.com/HAM/CentosDigitalModes/usr/local/sbin/packetrig.sh
