Which one is that?

The one that comes with FreeBSD is, I believe, version 1.8.5 or thereabouts.
My bet is that Mac OS X's is probably of a similar vintage.

Most of the newer BDB versions have a 1.8.5 compatibilty mode --- it might
be possible to use that, but with substantial rewriting of the map_cache
code.
