I agree, but it could be a real hassle for any package maintainer to keep

I can easily believe that it's enough work just to keep up with stable
releases, which are much less frequent.

I don't know if the ubuntu package maintainer is on this list --- as far as
I know it isn't one of the xastir developers.

The maintainer is Hamish Moffatt, according to the package itself.

I found an article out on Linux.com with a HOWTO on package building, so I decided to teach myself how to do it by making a .deb of a more recent CVS version.

I thought I'd just pull in the source of the Ubuntu package, then update it with cvs, then re-build the package. Sounds simple. Well, after doing a cvs checkout, I look in the xastir/ directory, and the Changelog has no notes since last November, which is when the 1.8.4 package was built. I've done some other poking around, and I don't find where the current version number is defined. WHen I run diff against the two directories, In acinclude.m4, I find an $Id: line that changed, with the ubuntu version having a 2006/02/09 date and your id 'tvrusso'. The current -r STABLE lists 2007/01/12 and we7u.

I guess I'll just compile and build that and see what I get...
