ubuntu. For example, wherever README.CVS or INSTALL refer to doing something

su
make install
Ubuntu would have you do:
sudo make install
Instructions to use "su" are peppered throughout the help files in xastir,
but you'll be very frustrated if you try to do that on ubuntu without
knowing a little more about what it's all doing and how to adapt it to
...or you can enable root access like this:
sudo passwd root
enter your password: xxxxxxxx
Enter NEW unix password: YYYYYYYY
Enter new Password again: YYYYYYYY
Where xxxxxx is your user password, and YYYYYYYY is the desired root
password.
Then instructions involving su can be followed.
Alternatively, in the Konsole 'session' menu, select 'new root console',
enter your own password, then you'll have a root shell and you won't have
to sudo for every command.
In Gnome (ubuntu) the new session menu is in the lower left corner, in KDE
(kubuntu), it's in the upper left corner.
