Berkeley DB in various forms is used by darned-near everyone.  It's
a very standard format.  Check whether it's open-source:

Berkeley DB is open source. From Oracle's website: Oracle Berkeley DB is a family of open source, embeddable databases that allows developers to incorporate within their applications a fast, scalable, transactional database engine with industrial grade reliability and availability.

It uses the Sleepycat public license rather than GPL.
