They didn't "get" psh from anywhere - they just assumed (incorrectly) that any cluster that their software would be run on would be managed by xCAT and that, therefore, psh would be available for their application to use. Unfortunately, we've had to keep CSM on life support for much longer than we had planned and psh isn't available on our systems. The equivalent function is provided in CSM by dsh, which can be used independently of the rest of CSM. Unfortunately, the application isn't written to interface to dsh and there is no interest in making it do so since IBM no longer supports CSM on Linux.
In any event, the lead on pdsh paid off, and we've downloaded it and
already have it installed and operational on a couple of systems where it
is needed. The vendor application supports the use of both psh and pdsh,
but not dsh. Since we now have pdsh, the problem has been solved. Thanks
to all for their responses to my query!

I guess my question is where did they get the psh before? Why cannot
they not be using the psh they have always used. There was no psh in csm?

Hi Lissa,
Thanks for your responses. I was trying to use the psh that comes with the
latest release of xcat that I installed from sourceforge. The system is
Red Hat EL5. What I attempted to do is try to install the client RPM and
whatever dependencies came with it since it seemed like psh was sort of a
separable thing that wouldn't require a whole lot of infrastructure under
it. However, once I saw directories containing files with RSA keys in
them, I started to get the idea that this wasn't the case. The responses
from the mailing list have confirmed that this is not the case.
I'll ask the vendor how easy it would be for them to modify their
application to use alternatives to psh and/or if their usage is such that I
can put together a wrapper script that invokes dsh or pdsh under the
covers. Thanks to all for the help.

What psh were you using? If it was the AIX one, then you should still be
able to use it. It is just on a different path from psh in xCAT. You
probably changed you paths by installing the xCAT client. The xCAT client
still requires an xCAT Management node to be running.

Lou,
I am not sure if you can accomplish this or not but there is a document
that explains migration from CSM to xCAT and it might provide some help.

Subject: [xcat-user] Can psh be used without installing the entire xCAT

We have an application that uses psh, but have not had an opportunity to
convert our clusters from CSM to xCAT. We've installed xCAT-client and its
pre-reqs on a node, but can't get psh to do anything after doing this.
Without a populated .xcat directory, psh comes back with "Connection
failure: No such file or directory". If I copy the .xcat directory that I
created on a test system into root's home directory, the message changes to
"Connection failure: Connection refused".
Is it possible to use what would seem like a separable piece of xcat
without dragging the whole ball of wax with it (you can use dsh
independently of CSM)? If so, is there a simple process somewhere that
explains how to do this? Or do I need the whole thing in order to use any
piece of it?
Thanks!
Lou
