1. You do not have to use regular expressions. You can set the hostname and IP directly for any node you add to xCAT as:

Set the node's IP address and hostname (only if a regex is not set for the group)
# chtab node=gpok3 hosts.ip="10.1.100.3" hosts.hostnames="gpok3.endicott.ibm.com"

2. You have to add any network that you plan to use into the networks table. It can be the network where the xCAT MN is being hosted, or another network. You can add as many networks as you want, just make sure xCAT MN can get to it.

3. You do not have to use NATing. That is only if you want nodes on a private network to have access to the public.

We have completed till configuration of zHCP . This would have not been possible with out your support

Now we are in Initializing Database step:

We have few basic queries

1. In step 5,

Is it mandatory to use Regular expressions to represent the IP address and hostname. If no, what is the alternate procedure to give the IP address range and hostname range?

2. In step 6,

How to find out the network ip and ethernet interface name in our environment? Does the network ip specifes the zVM ip address where the xCat is being hosted?.

As a initial step, our first goal is to create a Suse Linux image via xCAT UI.

Kindly advise on whether we have to follow all the steps provided in the below links or can we move on to the installation step for Linux

You can continue without using VSMREQIM & VSMREQI6. I have successfully used XCAT SMAPI and do not have either of those virtual machines running. VSMREQI6 is for TCPIP V6.

Thanks for your insights.

We have followed the steps provided by you in the last mail. We successfully configured the SMAPI and all the worker and request servers are up and running now except VSMREQIM, VSMREQI6 .

1) Will this create an issue or shall we proceed further?

2) Do we have any way to check whether we have configured SMAPI properly?

Now we are trying to Install and configure SMAPI but unable to proceed further.

We refered the available Red books in public domain including

z/VM: Directory Maintenance Facility Commands Reference
z/VM: Directory Maintenance Facility Tailoring and Administration Guide
z/VM: Directory Maintenance Facility Messages

Is it fine if we implement it in the below way :

we have define the request and worker server (This comes during installation )

Authuorization for request server comes by default in zVM 6.1 so we need to provide DirMaint authority to worker server, if so how do we give he authorization.

Following this just starting the server by logging in to VSMWORK1.
