I would not suggest defining node names in xCAT which are the same except
for case. We do not test that way. Not only DNS, some databases like
MySQL do not even accept it as a key in our nodelist table when there is
only a case difference in the nodename. You might run into problems in
other tools also.

In any case, we did not develop DNS , we only configure the files for
it , if you ran makedns in xCAT. If your DNS does not work with host name
defined the same except for the mixed-case, that is the DNS limitation
( bind rpm) on the OS you are using.
We do try and warn you not to do this, for example.

[manage-02][/etc/xcat]> mkdef Testnodexxxxx groups=new
Warning: The node name 'Testnodexxxxx' contains capital letters which may
not be resolved correctly by the dns server.
But we do create the entry.
[manage-02][/etc/xcat]> lsdef Testnodexxxxx
Object name: Testnodexxxxx
    groups=new
    postbootscripts=otherpkgs
    postscripts=syslog,remoteshell,syncfiles

            Node names

Hello Lissa

   I have taken over a query from user of ours, "subject" is the same but I
have omitted detail below, I can resend if required.
Basically the user appears to be sticking to his guns and pointing at the
following.

His response:

#########
DNS implementations must match case-insensitively but should preserve case
whenever possible.

See:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/std13 section 3;
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1035 section 2.3.3;
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4343 section 4;
http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5936 section 3.4;

and I’m sure its reiterated in some of the other related documents too.

Please re-open your ticket with them with pointers to the above.

There are many mentions of the words "whenever possible" or "In certain
circumstances this cannot be done" or "Loss of case sensitive data must be
minimized" So I agree he should simply use lowercase nodenames, or not
worry about it. Can we have a response along those lines please?
