Well, I emended the definition to the correct one (Polyglossia's requirement) \gappto\captionsmalayalam{\renewcommand{\chaptername}{}} For a change, I tried the following, too: \gappto\captionsmalayalam{\renewcommand{\chaptername}{അദ്ധ്യായം}} The error still remains.
