Well, I believe I have pretty much exhausted every option based on the referenced howto. As long as I leave my IntelliMouse section in XF86Config-4, gdm startup seems to politely ignore whatever I have for the Logitech optical mouse (which is itself progress of a sort). As soon as I comment out the IntelliMouse settings, gdm bombs (XF86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice No such device)
