Thanks! that works. Guess I must've forgotten about that. Now I'll have to go 
in all my zips and see what the rom files are called. I know I made some of 
the rom filenames very _long_ but gave them a short zip file name.

try "xmess.x11 nes -cart -rp /home/ste /nes/roms 1942.nes" instead.
It seems to want the rom name itself, and not the zip file (even if it
is zipped up).
