I'm in the process of working on a MAME cabinet and I'm tinkering with the
computer trying to figure out what is going to work best. My initial
assumption was that not using X could only be a good thing. Since XMAME
supported SDL and SDL can work with the framebuffer I figured that was the
way to go. Plus I started work on a frontend that was SDL based as well so
it seemed I was on track. Now that I've actually got a machine up and I'm
testing with it I'm wondering if I was wrong and I wanted to hear other
people's opinions or experiences.

Since everything will be run fullscreen does DGA under X give me an
advantage over using the generic framebuffer. Perhaps using DirectFB would
negate this, but I'm sure how well or not it works since I've yet to try it
out.

Lastly to ask a technical question, with X I can obviously set modelines for
various game resolutions and run them the way they were intended. Is the
same possible when using just the framebuffer? If not that could be the
deal breaker right there, since I don't really want to scale things.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Robert
