May I suggest you try my xmame packages then? These are :
 xmame-0.59.1-fr9.i386.rpm
 xmame-x11-0.59.1-fr9.i386.rpm
 xmame-SDL-0.59.1-fr9.i386.rpm
 xmame-xgl-0.59.1-fr9.i386.rpm
 grustibus-0.43.CVS20020410-fr5.i386.rpm

They have been made for Red Hat 7.2, many people are using them right now
(even people from inside Red Hat ;-)) and no problems have been reported so
far. You just need to install the main xmame package (contains cheats,
highscore file, directories, 3 free roms etc.) and at least one of the
three different binaries. The grustibus package is a cool GNOME frontend
that will work in no time, you just need to specify the location of the
xmame binary you will use in the prefs and that's it (mine are in
/usr/games/bin/).

I'll soon update to 0.59.2, and at the same time add a script to have
/usr/bin/xmame automatically linked to the best available xmame binary (in
order : xgl, SDL, x11) so that grustibus works instantly.

These are available through www/ftp/rsync and even apt from these places :

http://enigma.freshrpms.net/
ftp://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/enigma/
rsync://rsync.freshrpms.net/freshrpms/enigma/
http://apt.freshrpms.net/

Maybe this will help you ;-)
