I have thought about it.  One thing that stands in the way is the 
fix-comments script, which mangles one file (vendetta.c, I think), as well 
as d2u, which now mangles one of the CPU cores.

I think I'll first try to use the MESS CVS repository, though that still 
forces some people to use fix-comments if their compiler doesn't support 
C++/C99 comments.
