I don't know which caused the problem. Ive since quit using xv for xmame.

Try -yuv or -yv12 and see if that clears it up. If so, then the drivers for your laptop's video card probably don't handle the Xv RGB correctly. Is it an ATI card of some sort? Upgrading XFree86 or installing the GATOS drivers (http://gatos.sourceforge.net) might help.
