How did you build 0.72? There's no xmame 0.72 yet. If you used the 0.71.1 xmame stuff with the 0.72 mame source, I guarantee you that you didn't get a smooth compile. (I did just the same thing this morning, and had to make some changes to src/unix/video.c due to a core code change.)
As far as your screwy colors go, it would help if you'd tell us what the resolution and bit depth of the X server you're running is.
