I currently use X-Mame in a homemade cabinet with an old 25 inch fixed frequency monitor. I have only 1 X modeline and use the XV scaling( I used to use GL ). I use AdcanceMenu as the frontend for X-Mame, zsnes, X-Mess, Daphne, and zinc( I wrote a configurable keyboard driver for this ). It works really well. I used the KDE version of XDM and set it up to autologin the arcade account.
