Most likely a monitor. The arcade monitor seems like a PITA to me. Besides, I thought about buying a LCD flat-screen to keep the weight of the cabinet down as it weighs a ton already! Can anyone comment about playing MAME on an LCD vs CRT?
LCDs have a differential between the speed a pixel lights up and the speed they turn off. Typically the lighting up speed is quite fast, but it takes longer for them to turn black again. This leads to slight, but still barely perceptable, "ghosting" when games start getting fast. For short periods, you're not likely to notice. But after about an hour or so, my eyes start getting tired playing MAME on an LCD screen.
With me, my eyes get tired doing anything on an LCD, and the refresh becomes too noticeable. The other problem is that everyone keeps saying LCD screens are brighter than CRTs, but I think it's really the other way around.
Though I wouldn't trade my LCD for anything when it comes to reading text all day, if I were going to put together a good arcade cabinet, I'd stick with a CRT for it.
Yeah, the CRT is just much more authentic. Plus, even though the CRT weighs a hell of a lot more, the obvious advantage is price. My 21" Trinitron CRT (mmmm) is $100 used, and the 19" SGI LCD one of my friends got (also delicious for an LCD) being $400, well, 1/4 the money.
Besides, if you have money to blow on something like a 40" LCD, you should spend some of that to come to MAGFest =] ( http://magfest.org/ ) - hey, bring your MAME cabinets!
