I thought the sync information was taken from the composite output of the tv card? It would be pretty silly if it hooks up to the vga output ( most cards can still output a high frequency svga output with the tv output enabled ).
The gun shouldn't care what the source is, as long as the screen you are pointing at uses the source you've connected to the gun ( you of course do care as you need to see what you're shooting at ). I imagine a widescreen TV or one that resamples the input ( like those 100hz TV's ) is going to cause major problems though.
