There is a BIG difference:
Applications in /opt/ are in ONE subdirectory, whereas in /usr/local/ they
are spread over many subdirectories.
To remove an application under /opt you can simply "rm /opt/$APPLICATION"
This is not possible for a /usr/local/ installation.

Also HPUX, AIX, OSF/1, etc...
