You are not the only one having this problem. When gdm (or an xdmcp session) terminates, the screen either goes blank or just has a few lines flickering at the top. Sometimes you can restart gdm from another machine by ssh and then running gdm or X from the command line. This is with 2008.11 with the latest image update to snv111, on a very old PC normally used as an X-terminal. There is also a bit of a problem on startup. If you tell grub not to use graphical login, the screen is obviously out of sync with the frame buffer and is unusable. If you svcadm disable graphical-login but boot with graphical login enabled, you get the splash screen with the never-ending roller, but if you hit the return key the splash screen goes away and you get a text login. Not sure if the startup and shutdown problems are related but I suspect the solutions might be. One thing that would be really nice would be a command line login option like we used to have with the old dt login. A failsafe xterm isn't the same...
