Exactly my point for the initial post.

Why do I really care - I am setting up an "idiot proof"
laptop for a salesman he needs the desktop/X-window
system but it sure would be nice if it shutdown (i.e. left
X) cleanly either by:
A) typing "init 0" and went into text mode such that he see
"hit any key to reboot" at which point he can power
off the laptop (cleanly and safely).
B) GUI menu "Shut Down" and have it display in "clean"
text after X shuts down showing exactly what is
happening as the system stops services. I do not
think it will "power off" I think the user still gets a
message as in A) "hit any key to reboot" at which
point he can safely power off the system.
Obviously if the screen is "trash" after the window
environment is killed/disabled as part of the shutdown
process the key message will never be displayed.
