Is it the recently released SXDE 1/08? (i.e. does uname -v say "snv_79a")
Only that release has the radeonhd driver included - older releases didn't
support the Radeon X1000-series graphics cards.

Yep, by default it autoprobes and runs without one - however, that autoprobing
will not use the new, still experimental radeonhd driver, you have to have an
xorg.conf to specify it. You can generate one by going to a command line login
and running "/usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure" then moving the result to
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Neither ati nor radeon can work with that card, only radeonhd.
Beyond that, as Martin said - send /var/log/Xorg.0.log which
has all the juicy details of the monitor probing in.
