Will do, but I agree, I don't think it's an nvidia problem because the mode on the external screen (DVI) is correct. More likely a gnome or Xorg problem, not noticing the change. BTW, I found a work-around, which is to create an xorg.conf using nvidia-setting to set the 2nd dislay to "clone" and check the box "Make this the primary display..." for the larger (external) monitor. Once X restarts, the gnome panel is on the bottom of the (larger) screen as expected. Gordon
