No.  This was a series of excessed Dell boxes that I reclaimed.  Fresh new
installs, *not* an upgrade, and then the user's home dir was created and
then the user logged in.  There are other boxes loaded the same way that
does not have this problem.  The only hardware difference is that this box
has an extra network card card (e1000g0) put in, the native onboard is an
iprb0.  This is a local login, not remote desktop.

How can I fix?  I have tried re-setting the resolution but my choices are
all smaller than this, and I end up with big fuzzy fonts and giant terminal
windows.

The last time I logged in as root,  I don't recall having this problem, but
login was v-e-r-y s-l-o-w! It would take about 15 minutes (yes, 15!) to get
from the GDM greeter to where I get a working session.
