With X up and working properly: vgatext_silent: vgatext_silent: 3000000 After logout and new Xorg process is hung: same thing I noticed one other thing this time: When I go to log out of Gnome, a dialog box pops up that says "you'll be logged out in 60 seconds" and has a button to go ahead and log out now. I've been clicking that button (rather than waiting for the 60 seconds), and as soon as I do, the dialog and all the panels disappear, leaving just the background image. After a few seconds the screen goes black and the monitor reports no signal input, but the original Xorg process is still running at this point. Then gdm kills Xorg and starts a new one, but I think the graphics card is already hosed before the first Xorg exits.
