If the value comes back 1, the progress bar is not being shut off.
When the desktop is up, look very closely near the top of the display
for a thin horizontal area of distorted pixels, possibly changing
on the fly.

As an experiment, do a "reboot -p" and as soon as the progress bar
is put up after the grub menu, hit the Esc key a couple of times.
If all is well, the graphics screen should be brought down and
replaced with the text console.  If repeatedly hitting the Esc key
doesn't bring down the graphics screen, try unloading the NVIDIA
driver with:

   $ pfexec pkgrm NVDAgraphicsr NVDAgraphics
   $ pfexec reboot -p

and repeat this experiment.  I suspect with and without the
NVIDIA driver, you won't be able to turn off the progress bar.
